107. THREE DIFFERENT PATIOS

am.ma.en 07/12/2008 @ 02:26

In rural areas, courtyards are often a house extension - an outdoor «living room», a place to take a rest by the end of the afternoon or even to store some tools, fruits and seeds.

In urban areas, patios and courtyards can be very appealing places for different activities while providing quiet and privacy, even when the broad busy avenues are just around the corner...

(84) CAFE TERRACES AND TREES

Cafe terrace and umbrella-pines - Batalha, Portugal

A very nice group of Umbrella pines (Pinus pinea, family Pinaceae) - Batalha, Portugal.
Batalha means Battle: the town was named after the Battle of Aljubarrota, to celebrate the Portuguese victory against Castile (now Spain).

(38) PEDESTRIANS IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

am.ma.en 03/03/2008 @ 23:06

THE HEART OF THE CITY was the motto for the eighth Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne - International Congress of Modern Architecture - that took place in Hoddesdon, England, in 1951. More recently, an International Architecture Conference on The Heart of the City was the opening event for the Lisbon Architecture Triennale (June-July 2007).

One of the main principles approved during that Congress, nearly 60 years ago, was that the city centre ought to be a place without traffic, where pedestrians can move freely and easily.

Pedestrians' street in city centre - Vienna, Austria

Two examples of pedestrianised streets in european capitals' city centre: London, England (on top) and Vienna, Austria.

During the 1950 decade, the centre of the American city Fort Worth (Texas) was renewed according to that principle, so that the traffic disappeared within an area of 256 hectares (about 640 acres!).
The result: new cultural and leisure attractions and a city centre bustling with life - the area of retail increased 300%, the one of offices 60% and the one of hotels 80%.
THERE ARE NO DOUBTS about the benefits for everybody of the pedestrian's city centres!
[Source: Eng. Ferreira do Nascimento, Planeamento e Circulação Urbanas, Urban Planning and Traffic, Lisbon 1961].

In spite of this, and still nowadays in Portugal, some retail managers keep on influencing local politicians as much as they can, to maintain the traffic just outside their doors, because (they say) that's what's good for business...

(30) IN PERPETUAM REI MEMORIAM

am.ma.en 23/02/2008 @ 12:17

TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY of all those...
Because today
[January 28th] there is a commemoration ceremony by UNESCO for the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust .

WWII bombed Keiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche - Berlin, Germany

The church Keiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin was bombed during World War II but it has not been rebuilt - not like other buildings and monuments that were then destroied - on purpose. Germany.
LEST WE FORGET.

[NOTE: Because of some html limitations, it is not possible to insert a direct link to the UNESCO's Commemoration Ceremony web page. Here is the full document].
